  14. Welcome to the second issue of "Secrets of the Sega Sages."  This
  15. list contains tips, secrets, Easter eggs, passwords and cheats
  16. for Sega Genesis and Sega CD video games.
  17.  
  18. Here's a little background for the history buff.  In the not-so-
  19. distant past, Bryan Newell started a list called "Sega Genesis
  20. Secrets" and maintained it until he sold his Genesis.  Bob
  21. Rusaban took over the list on October 20, 1991, and maintained it
  22. and a separate list for Sega CD games until August, 1993.  In
  23. November of 1993, I took Mr. Rusaban's Genesis and Sega CD lists
  24. and merged them into the file you are reading now.  Since then I
  25. have improved the formatting, added a Table of Contents (Postscript
  26. version only), and added several more secrets.
  27.

  50. AFTERBURNER II
  51.        (Extra Missiles)  Before you reach the refueling plane,
  52.        enter one of the following codes depending upon your
  53.        level.

  67.        (Continue)  To continue a game after losing your last
  68.        plane, press LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, B, B, B, C, C, C, START.

  70.        (Reverse Controls)  To reverse your plane's controls,
  71.        hold down A and B on controller 2 and push START on
  72.        controller 1.

  75. AIR DIVER
  76.        (Level Select / Invincibility)  On the Mission Select
  77.        screen, move the cross-hair to a place on the map that's
  78.        not an area.  Hold START and press A, B, C, B, A, A, B,
  79.        C, B, A, B.  Release START and you will hear a soft ping.
  80.        Now move the cross-hair to the area you wish to attack.
  81.        Hold down START to be invincible, A to square off against
  82.        the Fighter Ace, B to fight the Super Carrier, and C to
  83.        battle the Last Fighter.  You have to hold down the
  84.        button until the area begins.  Note that you can hold
  85.        down START with any of the others.  For example, hold
  86.        down START and C to take on the Last Fighter and be
  87.        invincible.

  89.  
  90. ALADDIN
  91.        (Skip Level)  Pause the game, then press A, B, B, A, A,
  92.        B, B, A.  You will skip to the next level.
  93.  
  94.  
  95. ALIEN STORM
  96.        (Life Saver)  To use this trick, you must have enough
  97.        energy to do your extra move, and you must be the robot,
  98.        Scooter.  If you die while using Scooter, use his special
  99.        attack and you won't die.

  102. ALIENS 3
  103.        (Skip Level)  Go to the options screen.  With controller
  104.        2, enter C, UP, RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, A, RIGHT, DOWN.  You
  105.        should hear a power-up sound.  Now, start the game.  If
  106.        you pause the game and hit C, A, B, you should get some
  107.        vertical green lines.  Un-pause the game, and you will go
  108.        to the next level.

  111. ALISIA DRAGOON
  112.        Note:     Before using any of the tricks for Alisia
  113.             Dragoon you must do the following.  First, turn on
  114.             the game.  When the word "Sega" disappears, hold A.
  115.             When "Produced by Game Arts" disappears, release A
  116.             and hold B.  When "Associated with GAIMAX"
  117.             disappears, release B and hold C.  When "Music
  118.             Composed by Mecano Associates" disappears, release C
  119.             and press START.  You'll hear a bubbling musical
  120.             sound if you've done this correctly.  Now you can
  121.             use any of the following tricks.
  122.  
  123.        (Slow Motion)  Press A on controller 2 for slow motion.
  124.        Press B on controller 2 to resume normal speed.
  125.  
  126.        (Healing) Press A on controller 2, then hold UP on
  127.        controller 1 while pressing B on controller 2.  Alicia's
  128.        hit point gauge will refill.
  129.  
  130.        (Increase Magic) Press A on controller 2, then hold LEFT
  131.        on controller 1 while pressing B on controller 2.
  132.        Alicia's thunder magic will increase one level.
  133.  
  134.        (Increase Companion's Abilities)  Press A on controller
  135.        2, then hold RIGHT on controller 1 while pressing B on
  136.        controller 2.  This will increase the magic level and hit
  137.        points of your current companion.
  138.  
  139.        (More Powerful Magic) Press A on controller 2, then hold
  140.        B on controller 1 while pressing B on controller 2.  The
  141.        thunder magic becomes powerful enough to kill most
  142.        enemies with a single blast.
  143.  
  144.        (Skip Level)  Press C on controller 2 to skip the current
  145.        level.
  146.  
  147.        (Level Select)  You can warp to any other level by
  148.        pressing C on controller 2 while holding down one of
  149.        these codes on controller 1.

  166.        (Monster Select)  To select any monster on any round,

  170.        (Sound Test)  From the title screen, press and hold UP,
  171.        RIGHT, A, C and START.
  172.  
  173.        (Move Credits)  When you rescue Athena and the credits
  174.        appear, kick or punch them and they will scroll
  175.        downwards.

  178. ARNOLD PALMER GOLF
  179.        (Secret Game)  Putt 100 times on a hole to see a screen
  180.        from Fantasy Zone when the game is over.  Now press UP,
  181.        UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A.  You can
  182.        now play a limited game of Fantasy Zone until you reset
  183.        the game.
  184.  
  185.        (Secret Tournament)  Enter "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF999999999999999999"
  186.        at the password screen.  This will begin a new
  187.        tournament and give you a more experienced caddie.
  188.  
  189.  
  190. ARROW FLASH
  191.        (Unlimited Arrow Flashes)  Here's a way to arrow flash
  192.        your way through an entire level.  Go to the Option
  193.        screen and change Arrow Flash from "Stock" to "Charge".
  194.        Exit the Option screen and let the demo play all the way
  195.        through once.  Now start the game, and press C to
  196.        activate the arrow flash.  Hold C down, and your arrow
  197.        flash will last a very long time.  Sometimes it will go
  198.        out at the midpoint of a level, but just press and hold C
  199.        to reactivate it.  This way, you can zip though the
  200.        entire game!

  203. BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 3
  204.        (Level Skip)  Get back to the future with this trick.
  205.        When you want to skip a level, pause the game, hold A,
  206.        and press UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT to advance a level.

  209. BATTLETOADS
  210.        (Warp to Level 3)  To do this trick you must be very
  211.        quick!  In the beginning of the first level, head-butt
  212.        the two pigs that appear and then quickly run over to the
  213.        first platform on the right.  Jump onto the platform and
  214.        there will be a glowing warp.  Move into the warp and
  215.        you'll get a screen that tells you that you can advance
  216.        two levels!  Make sure that you are fast or the warp will
  217.        disappear.

  219.  
  220. BATMAN
  221.        (Extra Lives)  Play up to the fifth level until you get
  222.        to the second platform at the top.  Now walk off the left
  223.        side and fall in a straight line.  You'll pick up three
  224.        one-ups and lose one life.  The maximum number of lives
  225.        is 9.
  226.  
  227.  
  228. BATMAN: REVENGE OF THE JOKER
  229.        (Level Select)  First, enter the password "5257".  After
  230.        you've entered this code, a row of six mushroom-like
  231.        objects appears across the bottom of the screen.  To go
  232.        to any stage in the game, enter one of the following
  233.        passwords.

  258. BIO-HAZARD BATTLE
  259.        (Level Select)  Turn on the game.  When the Sega logo
  260.        appears, press and hold C.  Continue to hold C.  When the
  261.        title screen appears, make a full clockwise circular
  262.        motion with the joystick, starting and ending in the UP
  263.        position.  You should hear a noise if the cheat worked.
  264.        Then press START and you can start from any level!
  265.  
  266.  
  267. BULLS VS. LAKERS AND THE NBA PLAYOFFS
  268.        (Passwords)  To play the last round as the Chicago Bulls
  269.        against the Utah Jazz, enter "NXOBBBBL".  To see the
  270.        ending ceremonies, enter "NXWBBBBD".
  271.  
  272.        (Easier Game)  For an easier game against the computer,
  273.        press C while displaying your team's statistics screen.
  274.        This will display your opponent's stats.  Put the worst
  275.        players into your opponent's lineup.  During the game,
  276.        the computer will replace its bad players with its best.
  277.        When this happens, repeat the same sequence between
  278.        quarters or during a substitution, and put the weaker
  279.        players back into the computer's lineup.

  281.  
  282. BURNING FORCE
  283.        (Ten Lives)  Press B, A, B, A, A, C, A, A, and start your game.
  284.        You can also use this sequence to continue with 10 men.
  285.  
  286.  
  287. BUSTER DOUGLAS BOXING
  288.        (Rematch)  You can demand a rematch from any boxer by
  289.        pressing UP, B, and START at the same time.  You can only
  290.        use this once with each boxer.
  291.  
  292.        (Sound Test)  To listen to the game's tunes, press START
  293.        on controller 2 at the Game Select screen.
  294.  
  295.  
  296. CHUCK ROCK
  297.        (Skip Level)  At the title screen, press A, B, RIGHT, A,
  298.        C, A, DOWN, B, RIGHT, A.  After you do this, press and
  299.        hold A, B, and C and press START.  While you are in the
  300.        starting level, press UP while holding A.  This will
  301.        advance you do the next level.  If you do this in each
  302.        level, you will warp all the way to the very last level
  303.        where you will be able to fight the last boss by pressing
  304.        RIGHT and A together.

  306.  
  307. COLUMNS
  308.        (Magic Jewel)  Here's a trick to summon the magic jewel.
  309.        Play the game in Easy Arcade mode.  When you begin to
  310.        lose, fill the far left or far right two columns as high
  311.        as possible with jewels.  When you've completed the
  312.        column, the magic jewel will appear.
  313.  
  314.  
  315. COOL SPOT
  316.        (Skip Level / Invincibility)  While playing, press START
  317.        to pause the game.  Now C, A, B, C, B, A, C, A, B, C, B,
  318.        A, C.  If you did this correctly you will hear a tone.
  319.        Immediately afterwards, you will see the "Level
  320.        Completed" screen and will advance to the next level,
  321.        where you will be invincible.

  323.  
  324. CRUE BALL
  325.        (Skip Level)  Choose "Music Demo" from the title menu and
  326.        select #6 (Twisted Flipper).  Now press A, C, A, B and
  327.        begin the game.  Before you launch the ball, hold UP and
  328.        press B to advance to the next level.  To backup a level,
  329.        hold DOWN and press B.
  330.  
  331.        (Sound Test)  Do the Skip Level.  You'll be able to enter
  332.        a full sound test at any time during the game by pressing
  333.        A, B, and C together.

  430.        (Slow Motion)  Start the game and pause it any time.  Now
  431.        press UP, LEFT, RIGHT, DOWN, A.

  433.        (Skip Level)  At any time during play, pause the game and
  434.        press UP, LEFT, RIGHT, DOWN, B.  You will now skip the
  435.        current level.

  437.        (Color Test)  Here's a unusual code for you, a color
  438.        pattern for adjusting your TV or monitor!  At the Wolf
  439.        Team logo screen, hold down A, B, C and press START.

  442. E-SWAT
  443.        (Level Select)  At the game over screen press and hold
  444.        DOWN and LEFT while pressing A, B and C, then press START
  445.        until the music repeats.  A Round Select screen will
  446.        appear.

  449. EX-MUTANTS
  450.        (Cheat Menu)  Go to the "Options Screen" and set the
  451.        "Music" to 05 and the "Sound FX" to 21.  Now highlight
  452.        "Exit" and hold A, B, and C while pressing START.  You'll
  453.        hear Shannon say "Too easy!" and move to the "Cheater
  454.        Cheater" menu.  This menu offers  level select, unlimited
  455.        weapons, and a few other choices.  Note that the game
  456.        will automatically start after selecting one of these
  457.        options.

  459.  
  460. F-22 INTERCEPTOR
  461.        (Harder Game)  For a real challenge, enter "GPRJCM" for a
  462.        password.  You'll face an aerial onslaught of F-22's, KC-
  463.        135's and MIGs.
  464.  
  465.        (More Options)  During your game, simultaneously press B
  466.        and C.  An Option screen will appear where you can select
  467.        unlimited firepower, invincibility, automatic targeting,
  468.        and more!
  469.  
  470.  
  471. FATAL FURY
  472.        (More Continues)  Here is a tip to get unlimited
  473.        continues.  After losing, the Continue screen will come
  474.        up with the number of credits shown in the left-hand
  475.        corner.  Hold UP and press A, B and C simultaneously.
  476.        Release A, B and C, then press them again.  Each time you
  477.        do this your credit will go up by one.  You can do this
  478.        as often as desired.
  479.  
  480.  
  481. FATAL LABYRINTH
  482.        (Extra Weapon)  The Punch is a powerful undocumented
  483.        weapon, especially useful against creatures that destroy
  484.        weapons.  Go to the Options screen, choose the Weapon
  485.        icon, and discard your equipped weapon.  You can pick it
  486.        up again.
  487.  
  488.  
  489. FIGHTING MASTERS
  490.        (Easier Game)  For an easier game, go to the Options
  491.        screen and set Level Select on "Easy" and Continue on 5.
  492.        Then go to Music Select and listen to 8C, 8B and 8A.
  493.        Next, go to Sound Select and listen to 90.
  494.  
  495.        (Harder Game)  Perform the same procedure as above, but
  496.        set Level Select to "Hard" instead of "Easy".
  497.  
  498.  
  499. FLASHBACK
  500.        (Level Select)  Here are all the passwords to Flashback
  501.        in easy, normal and expert mode.  To see the ending,
  502.        enter "CYGNUS".

  524. GAIARES
  525.        (T-Braster Weapon)  Fire the TOZ six times before
  526.        capturing an enemy.  You will receive the T-Braster
  527.        weapon when you capture your next enemy.
  528.  
  529.        (Secret Level)  Fire the TOZ 128 times.
  530.  
  531.        (Level Select)  From the title screen, go to
  532.        Configuration Mode by holding any button and pressing
  533.        START.  Select "18" on B.G.M.  Now press and hold A on
  534.        controller 2 and exit the Configuration Mode.  A Stage
  535.        Select screen will appear when the game begins.
  536.  
  537.        (Weapon Select)  Enter the Level Select mode.  After
  538.        starting, pause the game and hold UP and press A to
  539.        select your weapon.

  541.        (Weapon Power Up)  Enter the Level Select mode.  After
  542.        starting, pause the game, hold UP, and press A twice.
  543.        Unpause the game, and fire the TOZ for full power.
  544.  
  545.        (Invincibility)  Pause the game, then hold A and C while
  546.        pressing LEFT.  The screen will freeze.  Unpause the
  547.        game, and you'll be invincible until you finish that
  548.        level.  You can repeat this trick on each level.

  550.  
  551. GAIN GROUND
  552.        (Level Select)  Go to the Option Screen and press A, C,
  553.        B, C.

  556. GALAHAD
  557.        (Unlimited Lives)  To never run out of lives, enter the
  558.        starting world in the Options screen as "LTUS".  Then
  559.        start the game with any other options desired.  When you
  560.        die, you will always come back with nine lives.

  562.        (Skip Level)  Enable unlimited lives.  Press A and START
  563.        at the same time to skip the current level.

  567.        (Level Select)  To go to any level in the game, press UP,
  568.        DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT at the title screen.  Repeat until you

  593.  
  594.        (Slow-motion)  Use the Level Select, Invincibility, or
  595.        Japanese Play tricks.  While the game is paused, press
  596.        START to pause the game.  Hold B to play in slow motion.
  597.  
  598.        (Japanese Play)  To play the Japanese version, select
  599.        "Option" from the opening screen.  Choose "26" for music
  600.        and "56" for sound.  Then hold LEFT-DOWN, A, B, C and
  601.        START simultaneously.

  603.        (Japanese title screen)  First you insert a "Super

  1354.        (Password Structure)  The following is a breakdown of the
  1355.        password structure.  This description is rather technical
  1356.        and offers of rewrites will be greatly appreciated.
  1357.  
  1358.        HOW THE PASSWORD WORKS:
  1359.  
  1360.            Each of the eight password characters is a 5-bit value
  1361.            represented by the characters "0" (00000) thru "V" (11111).
  1362.  
  1363.            The first four characters of the password how much money
  1364.            you have in units of $10.  Only the high-order 4 bits of
  1365.            each of these characters are used; the use of the low-
  1366.            order bit is unknown, but it contributes to the checksum
  1367.            in the 8th character.
  1368.  
  1369.            The 5th character indicates the current level (1-5) in
  1370.            the low order three bits.
  1371.  
  1372.            The 6th character indicates one of the 16 available bikes
  1373.            in the high-order 4 bits as a value from 0 (intro bike)
  1374.            to 15 (binary 1111, "Wild Thing", available only through
  1375.            a special startup sequence or via the password).

  1377.            The 7th character indicates the tracks on which you have
  1378.            qualified in the order (high bit to low bit) Vermont,
  1379.            Arizona, Tennessee, Hawaii and Alaska.

  1381.            The 8th character is a checksum.

  1383.        HOW TO GET MORE MONEY:

  1385.            To increase the amount of money you have by tens of
  1386.            thousands of dollars, increase the value in character 1
  1387.            in increments of 2 and decrease the value in character 2
  1388.            by the same amount (you must adjust both to allow the
  1389.            checksum value in the 8th character to remain valid).

  1391.        HOW TO INCREASE LEVEL:
  1392.  
  1393.            Increase the 5th character by one to four (to a maximum
  1394.            value of "5") and also increase the 8th character by the
  1395.            same amount.  If you get "password invalid", try changing
  1396.            the 8th character until it works.

  1398.        HOW TO SELECT A DIFFERENT BIKE:
  1399.  
  1400.            Increase the 6th character in steps of 2 and decrease the
  1401.            4th character by the same amount.  This will also
  1402.            slightly reduce your money, but it allows the checksum
  1403.            value (character 8) to remain valid.  To select the
  1404.            undocumented bike named "Wild Thing", you must be on the
  1405.            intro bike, set the 6th character to "V" then increase
  1406.            the 4th character by 2.

  1408.        HOW TO MARK TRACKS AS QUALIFIED:

  1410.            Select the appropriate value for the 7th character then
  1411.            experiment with the 8th character until the password is
  1412.            accepted.  For example, to qualify on all tracks but
  1413.            Arizona, the value 10111 is required, which translates to
  1414.            an "N" (see description above).  Change the 7th character
  1415.            to "N" then find an 8th character that works.

  1418. ROLO TO THE RESCUE

  1542.        (Get All Emeralds)  This cheat allows you to start at the
  1543.        First Level with all the Emeralds, and with lots of
  1544.        Continues.  Use the Level Select cheat (see above) to get
  1545.        to the Special Zone.  When you get the Emerald, and have
  1546.        entered into the First Zone, press RESET.  Use the Level
  1547.        Select cheat to get to the Special Zone again.  When you
  1548.        get the next Emerald, and have entered the First Zone,
  1549.        press RESET again.  When you finally have all the
  1550.        Emeralds do not press RESET, just continue on with First
  1551.        Level.  You get to keep the Emeralds and the Continues
  1552.        accumulated so far.

  1554.        (Control Mode)  At the title screen, press U, C, D, C, L,
  1555.        C, R.  Or, if that doesn't work, try this: Quickly press
  1556.        C four times, then press U, D, L, R repeatedly until you
  1557.        hear a chime.  This will give you special techniques
  1558.        during the game: While paused, pressing A will reset the
  1559.        game, pressing B will allow you to play in slow-motion
  1560.        (while B is held down), and pressing C will advance the
  1561.        game one frame at a time.

  1563.        (Debug Mode)  Enter Control Mode.  After pressing START
  1564.        to begin a game, hold down A until you see Sonic on the
  1565.        screen.  If you see a bunch of hex numbers on the top of
  1566.        the screen, you're in Debug Mode.  To start "debugging,"
  1567.        press B, then you can select any sprite in that level and
  1568.        put it on the screen.  To select a different sprite,
  1569.        press A, and to place it on the screen, press C.  Note
  1570.        that sprite selection is different from Zone to Zone.

  1572.        the number of sprites currently on the screen.  Control
